overall -- Jay is about 5'6", a fairly average height for a man his age. His weight is a healthy 148 Pounds, and because of this, his body is lightly toned and fit, looking more like a swimmers body than anything. His skin is pale, which is probably the reason that he gets burnt so easily in the Summer/Autumn/Spring sun, and the reason that he stays indoors during these seasons. His hair is a very, very light blond, though dyed ever so slightly to make it lighter than it usually is, and styled in a fairly normal haircut, be it spiked or not. His eyes are a blue-gray with darker blue flecks near the iris. He doesn't have to wear glasses or contacts except for reading far away, and it's a light prescription at that. He has a few tattoos on his right arm, though they're rather sparse, and on his left arm he has only one tattoo, which is on his upper arm. The only piercings he has his right below his lip, and on his right ear, proudly stating that he is indeed, homosexual. His usual clothing includes a simple t-shirt, sometimes having things on them such as a British flag, some jeans, his leather jacket, plain black converse, and his silver watch that his brother once owned. However, due to the dressy policy of Jefferson Heights, he's seen in a stiff, uncomfortable suit, tie, and leather shoes.
i was a hero early in the morning
I AIN'T NO HERO IN THE NIGHT
likes -- Because of his English background, he does enjoy playing the piano. He feels that it can express what words can't, and that it's the best way to go when you can't say what you want to. Most of the time, he let's the piano talk for him. Because of this way of thinking, he tends to write music for the piano, as well as lyrics at times. He loves writing and reading, because they are the next best thing to having a piano express your words. He also likes singing, though he refuses to do it in the open. His singing isn't anything amazing, but it has good quality to it. Not good enough to use it as a profession, but good enough to not be embarrassed about it, even though he is. Finally, the thing he likes the most is silence and darkness. It's the only way to legally ease his mind.
dislikes -- Because of his past, he absolutely hates drug addicts. He's a little ashamed of this, because he used to be one, and slightly understands why they turn to it, but it doesn't change the fact that he hates them more than anything, because that leads to idiotic things like forcing a family member to overdose. He hates his father, because he overdosed as well, and was the reason that he thought of doing drugs in the first place. He hates idiots, who can't even hold an intelligent conversation. You know, those kids who don't care about anything but getting someone from the opposite (or same) sex, and fucking all night long. Yeah, those idiots. He also can't stand discriminators, be it of race, sexual orientation, religion, or otherwise. He can't stand it at all, and believes that above all, they should be the ones who are rejected by society. Lastly, he hates loud noise. It breaks his concentration, and makes his ears feel like their going to bleed. Also, it reminds him of that night that his mother came in to find Robbie dead.
fears -- -Getting addicted again
-Being the cause of another death
habits -- -When Jay is nervous, he tends to tap his fingers. It reminds him of the piano, and keeps his mind off of whatever he's nervous about. When he's trying not to laugh or smile a corner of his mouth moves up. When he's happy, he tends to imagine a piano in front of him and play it.Finally, when he's sad, he tends to bite his lip so that he doesn't sigh, or show any other signs of sadness.
secrets -- His biggest secret his that he used to be a drug addict. There are two reasons that. One, because he's simply ashamed of the whole thing, and two, because he doesn't want to be seen as a hypocrite. His other secret, which is also fairly big, is that because of him, his brother is dead. He wouldn't share that with anyone, because he doesn't want to be viewed as a murderer.
overall -- One thing someone can say about Jay is that he's a rather happy person. He won't be off emoing in the corner over something stupid. Even if it's not trivial, chances are that he won't really get that depressed over it. It's mostly because that chapter of his life is over, and it's a closed case. Unless he really cared about you and you die, don't worry about him needing to take depression pills. Jay tends to day dream a lot. To some people, it might seem like carelessness, but chances are, he's remembering something he doesn't want to, and he doesn't realize that he's doing it. If he ignores you, he doesn't mean to. He's also fairly honest. He's not worried about hurting your feelings, and he's not uncomfortable if you cry. He believes that in most, if not all cases, honesty is the best policy. Jay is also rather loyal to his friends, and whoever he's dating. Once you've crossed that line from unknown to well-known, you have his undying loyalty. No matter how much trouble you were in, he would lie for you.
Jay tends to waver in his decisions. He's a little impulsive at first, diving into things, but as soon as he gets the chance to think of it, if he feels as if there was something that would have been a better decision, he'll quickly change his mind. Because of this, Jay is a little bit of a pushover. While there aren't many people that would walk all over a grown adult, it does happen sometimes, and of course, he says nothing, because he doesn't know how to do anything but go with the flow. He doesn't want to be that person that points every single little thing out, and he believes that people walking over him is just a trivial matter.

history -- His mother and father were from well off families. They weren't really rich, but they weren't bad either. They met one another during a dinner held for some of the more 'well off' families, and instantly hit it off. Only two years after that, they were married, and had their first child.
Jaimie was named after his mother's father, who had died a year previously due to cancer of the lungs, though he hadn't smoked a day in his life. He was their main pride and joy, and for a while, they never wanted any kids.
When he was three, his first sibling, the young Robbie, was born. Like the long line of Robert's, Robbie was named after his father. They were both spoiled in their fairly large family, and even more so when their first sister came along, named Aimee, after his father's mother, who had just recently passed, only a few weeks before she was born.
Finally, disaster struck the Laird family. His father Robert overdosed, killing himself, and leaving behind a widow and their three children, with no way of income.
It was then, a sixteen year old Jay started to do drugs of all kind, from acid to heroine and everything in between. He got addicted easily, falling into the pattern set by his father only half a year before. Drugs, Sleep, Work, Drugs, Sleep.
Finally, when Jay was eighteen, his brother came to confront him, only a young seventeen, to see his older brother shoot up, already high on acid, previously used. Eventually he coaxed his brother over, and forced a fresh needle in his arm, and then watched in horror as the drugs took the wrong effect, and slowly killed his brother.
Soon after he was blamed for his brothers death, yet cleared of all charges, He was rehabilitated, and then put into a University, where he studied to be a teacher for high schoolers. He eventually succeeded, and then moved away from the horrid place called London, England, and moved to America.
In America, he taught at about three schools, each only lasting for about a year. All of them were in South Carolina. Finally he was asked to come to Jefferson Heights to teach Literature, and he accepted, beginning another 'First Year'.
