overall -- Em has dark brown hair that falls just below her shoulders. She usually wears it straight down, but sometimes pulls it up. Especially when she dances. Then it's a tight ballerina bun. Em has a very polished look. She believes that first impressions are the most important, and feels that to be your best, you have to dress your best, so she wears nice clothes. She'd never be caught dead in a teeshirt and sweats, unless she was working out. And she hardly ever wears jeans, as a rule.

overall --
When you meet Em for the first time, she comes off as this happy go lucky, carefree sort of girl. She's confident, friendly, and all around a fun person to hang out with. But for the few people who get to know her, they'll know that she's nothing of the sort. The real Em is the girl who'd rather no one notice her at all, the one who's so insecure it hurts, the one who cries herself to sleep every night, because she feels like she's worthless and will never amount to anything. But unless you're one of her best friends, you'll never know that. To everyone else, she's the bubbly girl who doesn't let anything get her down, and can always put a smile on your face. The reason she is so good at that is because she knows how to fake it. Everything you see is a facade. She's so afraid people won't like her for her, that she shuts the real Em somewhere deep inside. The only way you'll see the real Em is through her dance. That's how she gets all her emotions out. By dancing. And she is a very good, passionate dancer. It's the only thing that truly makes her happy.

history --
It was a cold, blustery evening, the year was 1984, the place, Harvard University. 24 year old Roberts James Faulkner was headed back to his dorm after a study group broke up at the library. He was passing the school courtyard, where, in the corner of his eye, he saw a lovely girl alone on a bench, and she looked as if she'd been crying. Being his kind, out going self, he went over to her and asked if anything was wrong. She said no, even though she knew it was a lie. Her boyfriend of two years, the man she'd hoped to marry, had just broken up with her. And she was not very happy about it. Robert invited her to go get some coffee with him, and she agreed, having been sitting out in the cold for a while, she thought she could use a warm cup of coffee. By the end of the night, she couldn't even remember the name of her ex-boyfriend, being completely smitten with Mr. Faulkner. And he was smitten with her. Four years later, the two were married in Nancy's hometown of Fairfax, Vermont.
Within two years, they had their first child, a son whom they christened Eric Riley Faulkner. They were extremely happy, and never planned on having another child. But four years after their first, another child came along. A little baby girl who would be known as Emmeline Rose Faulkner, the main character of the story. She was born on a bright, summer day, to two happy parents. Although she wasn't planned, she was loved, and they were extremely happy to have a daughter. Emmeline was a very blessed little child. Both of her parents had come from 'old money', and they made quite a bit of money themselves, both having very good jobs. She had everything she ever wanted, and everything she could have possibly needed. She started dancing when she was three years old. When she started, her mother had just planned for it to be something to keep her busy, and something she could have fun with, never something she would pursue a career in. But Em loved to dance ever since her first class, and wanted to become a dancer more than anything.
Her mother wasn't very thrilled about this, development. She wanted her daughter to grow up and be a doctor, or a lawyer, or something worth some merit. In her mind, dancing was for people who weren't smart enough to do anything else, and that is something that Em and her never saw eye to eye on. Em's father, on the other hand, was very supportive of her dreams of becoming a dancer. He was the one who actually took her to dance, her mother being to busy with work, and he never missed a single one of her recitals. Em appreciated his support, and the bond she had with her father was stronger than the one she had with her mother would ever be. Eric was the one who was close to their mother, because he was brilliant, and didn't want to do anything frivolous like dance, no, he planned on becoming a doctor, or surgeon. Something Em would never be. That fact put the brother and sister at odds. Eric was a momma's boy, and Em was daddy's little girl. They both resented that they each had a better relationship with the other of their parents. But it wasn't enough to make them hate each other.
Eric was, and still is, the older, protective brother that you'd expect to get from someone four years older. They just had their differences growing up, like all siblings do. But everything changed when Em was fourteen years old. She and Eric were home alone, both her parents away at work. It was the last day of summer break, and Em was not looking forward to going back to school. The doorbell rang, and Eric went and answered the door. There on the porch stood two policemen, and they brought terrible news. Their mother had been shot, murdered, at the hospital. One of the parents of one of her patients who had passed away went crazy and brought a gun to the hospital. He'd shot their mother and three other people. The three others had survived, but their mother didn't. It was the worst thing that had ever happened to Em, and she just couldn't believe it was true. Despite their disagreements, Em loved her mother, and couldn't take in the fact that she was gone.
Her father went sort of crazy at the news, and he quit his job, sold the house, and brought Em to Summerset, South Carolina to live with her grandmother, and just left. Eric had been excepted to Oxford University, so he didn't go with Em. Losing her mother was extremely hard for Em, but what was harder was the fact that her brother went away to school, and her father just disappeared at the same time. And starting a new school in a new town wasn't that much fun either. Her whole life was turned upside down in the matter of a week, and she was completely distressed. The only thing that was the same was dance, and she took refuge in that. She began spending all her time dancing, and her grades began to slip. Her grandmother told her that if she didn't keep her grades up, she wouldn't be allowed to dance anymore, so she started spending a little more time on her schoolwork, just to keep up her B average.
Instead of shutting herself up, and not socializing, like she probably would have done in any other situation, she became this confident, carefree girl. At least on the outside. She just pushed everything she was actually feeling deep inside where no one would be able to get to it. It was probably the worst thing she could have done, but she thought it was the only way to deal with everything that had happened without breaking.
