The empty halls of Jefferson Heights were light and happy, the school was flourished and well kept. From what Nathan saw through his eyes was a piece of crap, everything gloomed, every item had a shadow. He came from Summerset West school, he didn't need any snobby rich-wannabe's telling him what to do. Not that Nathan cared of anything, he didn't want to be apart of the rich grand scheme of it. He didn't like who he was now, being the depressed and shy self he was seemed better than being a greedy money hauler. He knew he would never 'excel' at Jefferson Heights, he just knew he'd pass and get the heck out of this town. Nathan didn't want to stay with the same people through his whole high school life, he was finally getting used to Summerset West. Then they moved everyone to this new 'elite' school, they said it'd 'help' and 'enhance' their learning capabilities. It was a death sentence to all the kids was basically what they were saying. Nathan hated the nicely decorated dorms, nice food, good quality classroom supplies, the teachers who knew what they were talking about, and the amount of teacher aids asking 'what's the matter?'. He hated those three words with passion, everyday he gets some random kid who gets dared to go sit with him for five minutes and try to figure out why he's always so sad and quiet. Let's just say that never happens, the kid leaves after 30 seconds because of the look they get from Nathan, they run back laughing with their friends.
Nathan sighed to himself as he neared the familiar doors of the library, he always went here at around 9:00 at night. He checked his cell phone really quick, it was 8:56. I'm early today, very nice accomplishment of the day Nate. He gave himself a small smirk for his accomplishment then it quickly faded to his mask he usually wore. He stopped infront of the doors, the librarian was usually in the back room by this time. He opened the door and it gave a small creek noise, he hated that noise. In his hand was his ruffed up journal, it had many torn pages and many pages just stuck in random orders. The dates were in the correct order luckily. Most of his pages were filled with how he was such a misfit, sometimes he just fit in. That'd never happen. Today was a good day for Nate, he hadn't gotten any 'what's the matter?'s' or had any teacher call on him for an answer. He'd write about how this was such a great day, about how he arrived 4 minutes earlier than he usually did. How amazing it was to get away from his house. The only good thing about this school was that it was a boarding school. Away from the pain, away from the suffer, away from the yelling, away from everything he once was...
As soon as Nathan saw the librarian desk he saw the little old lady sitting at the desk, her white bun secured on her head. Her little square reading glasses, they were glued to a book. The librarian looked up and smiled sweetly, "back again Mr.Goodwin?" The question was rhetorical and was usually left unanswered by Nathan. Today was a good day so why not talk to probably his favourite staff member? "yes, I write here." He said in a bored tone, the librarian knew he wrote here everyday at 9 but everyday she asked that question. "Glad to see such a young man writing so much, take a seat Nathan. I was just about to close down the library but then you walked in." She said daintily, she smiled her wrinkled eyes closing slightly. Nathan gave her a sharp nod and walked over to his usual table in the corner.
The deep green hoodie he wore stuck out from the crowd, he had the hood on his head (even though hoods weren't allowed around the school area's). The librarian didn't seem to mind and let him be. The tiny soft thuds of his All Star black runners across the carpeted library floors made it echo through the many rows of book shelves. Nathan wore his big reading glasses he wore when he wrote, along with a black collared shirt underneath his sweater. His jeans were faded from being washed so many times, they fit nicely showing how tall he was. He kept his black Blackberry flip phone in his pocket, he adjusted it to be on silent so it wouldn't ring to disturb him.. Not that anyone would call. In his contacts he had 5 or 6 people, he was hoping he'd have more once he had gotten this new phone.. That wasn't the case.
He got ready to write, he went to the next blank page he could find and set his running black ink pen onto the paper. Out of his bag he got out a pack of stick it notes he kept with him, Nathan flipped his reading glasses over his eyes and started on the crisp white sheet of paper.
October.17th he wrote in his messy scrawl. --> Today, I had an alright day, everything flowed smoothly. A few cravings were satisfied, not gonna mention my good friend the drink that I stashed away behind my pillow. I didn't get called on by a teacher, nor did I get a 'what's the matter?'. I arrived 4 minutes earlier to the library, what an accomplishment! Yes I am such a loser I write how I made it early to a place I come to everyday. I'm blending into crowds better, no one see's through me yet... I have been to this school for about a month or so and so far.. It's a freaking hell hole. I hate it, I hate the thought of going back home too... My dad called me earlier today, told me we could go to a ball game on Sunday. No way am I going to that, WITH HIM !
Nathan shut his journal with a thud and got up, he looked around the library. He wasn't expecting anyone to come through the doors, but he kinda hoped someone would... No way is someone coming.. Then why am I still here? Nathan slid his glasses off then placed them ontop of his head nicely. He sat there waiting for someone.. Someone he hoped would hear his plea's. Someone who'd know the sadness he felt.. He knew no one existed but can't a guy hope? AND THERE'S NO MOVING ON cause i'm already gone - - - - - - - - - - A book fell off of the bed as Artemis shook the covers, that was quite usual for her, the amount of books that she took out of the library she didn’t know where half of them where. She had alot of them all over the room, which was one of the perks of having no roommate, you could have things all over the room and no one complained about you. Artemis wasn’t messy, if you looked at the room you would see that it was actually quite tidy it was just that the books... they liked to hide themselves. She couldn’t explain it, she put the book down for a second and it disappeared! She must have just forgotten where she had put it down, but surely if she put it in the middle of the bed it should still be there when she turned around then? Oh well, it was a mystery. Of course there would be a logical explanation for it somewhere, she may have moved it subconsciously while tidying and put it away somewhere by accident. She may have sat on the bed and it had gone down the side, that was also a good explanation. She couldn’t decide what was better, she should really just take better care of them, she never knew when she may have to get to them quickly and easily, and it they were hidden around her room it could prove to be quite a problem. Like if she had a English test, and the book was about the subject. She would obviously need it then and she might not be able to find another copy in the library.
She looked at the book that had fell out of her bed, it was one of The Lord of The Rings books, the Fellowship of The Ring. When had she got this out? It must have been quite a while ago, good job this library had a long borrowing time. She had only been at this school for a little while but the library was one of the places she was starting to know quite well. It was a place that was nearly always quiet and there was hardly anyone there at all. But she had had this book for a long time, it was possible that it needed to be handed it soon. She opened the book and groaned, today. That was just her bad luck wasn’t it? But wouldn’t that also be good luck? If she hadn’t have found the book she would have handed it in late, it was something that could go two ways. She looked around the room, it still needed tidying some more but that could wait until tomorrow. Anyway, it was late and the library would be closed soon. Hopefully she would be able to catch it before it closed, she may even have some time to look for some more books that would hopefully not be handed in late. Oh yes, she wished. They would be put down somewhere and, poof! Gone. Of course she will try and look after it but she was doubtful that it would work, she had probably thought it before at some time.
She grabbed the book and walked out of the room, shutting the door behind her with her foot. She started to jog towards the library, she wanted to get there before it closed but she wasn’t really that bothered. If she had to she would just go tomorrow. Jogging out of the dorms she passed some girls having a cigarette by the corner. They laughed at her as she ran, calling to her “Running after your shag?” and suchlike. She ignored them but she couldn’t help but glare towards the library as she ran. Why couldn’t they leave her alone? They surely had some other people to go and annoy. It could just be that she was new here... if only. She was quite certain that this would carry on for some time, unless something made it stop. But what one earth could stop that? It’s not like someone was going to up to them and whack them around the head until they stopped, however nice it sounded. She wished that she could do it, but she kind of didn’t want people to think she was violent as well, that would probably make the whole thing worse in the long run, which was not something that she wanted. No one would want it, and if they did they were a psycho. Seriously, only a mad person would want that, to be made fun of even more. It was a total lunatic thought. Haha, very funny, right?
Artemis stopped at the door to the library and was glad to find out that it opened. At least there was one thing that she wouldn’t have to worry about, yeah, now there was just everything else. She placed the book on teh front desk quietly, she couldn’t see the librarian but she didn’t want her to talk to her. Why was it open now anyway? Maybe it was open later tonight? Oh well, it didn’t matter anyway, it was actually quite good. She scanned the shelves closest to her and pulled out a few books, glad to be somewhere where it was quiet. She just had to make sure the librarian didn’t decide to go and lock her in. That could be a bit of a problem. She walked down the shelves a little farther until she found a spot surrounded by shelves towards the desk. At least she wouldn’t be seen by anyone walking into the library, but who would come in now? She sighed and looked across for a second, slightly shocked to see a guy just sitting at a desk. He looked lonely. Great, more people with problems, she thought. It wasn’t that she didn’t care about these things, but it was just so annoying. She had problems, he obviously had problems but then there were people going around all high and mighty. She rolled her eyes at herself, right, now she was thinking sad thoughts. Way to go Artemis. Like you haven’t got enough.

The quietness of the library was very calming, Nathan enjoyed sitting here for long periods of time and just think. He needed some reflection time, this was the time of the day he chose. He heard someone enter the library, he didn't even bother to check who it was... It was probably another royal asking about extra credit work because they'll need it. He rolled his eyes and he kept his gaze on his journal, he had opened it to a blank page. What to write next ... He sighed and just shut the journal altogether. His good mood was already spoiled for no particular reason, he was back to sulking and being the same old Nathan Goodwin everyone ignored.
Nathan looked back at the librarian desk, she had went into the back room like she usually did at 9:30. The library closed at 10:00, most of the time she let Nathan stay longer and just think. He never caused any drama like the royals did when they came in they come in packs, they came in and just started talking. When libraries have low chatter it is fine, when it's normal outside voices Nathan just gets plain old annoyed. He picked up a book that was laying on the table, it was something about Shakespeare. Nathan opened to the first page, it was the story of Romeo and Juliet. If only Romeo and Juliet's true love existed... It was true Nathan didn't think love existed, even if it did he'd never fall in love. He was too afraid, he's never had a crush before either.
He heard people shuffling by the bookshelf he was sitting by, he finally looked to his left to see a girl. She looked a bit younger than he was, but he could be wrong. She had red-auburn hair that hung to her waist, it was kept very nicely. She had very little makeup on, it seemed she was more natural than some girls who packed it on. Nathan looked at her face, she was very stone-like. He hoped she wasn't one of those people who pretend she has problems when it's just that her boyfriend broke up with her things. Nathan made a small face of disgust to himself at those people, some people didn't fake it. People like Nathan didn't fake it, everything he felt was surreal. The pain from the abuse still haunted him, he knew if he had returned back home and didn't go to a boarding school he would be abused still.
Nathan didn't bother turning around, he kept his face as hollow and distant like it usually was. With a straight toned voice he said, "what brings you here?" His back was towards the girl at the moment. He didn't bother with making introductions first, Nathan liked things straight one way only. As old fashioned as he was that was the way he was. Nathan wouldn't change at all, he'd always be this way. "I've never seen you around here, are you new?" He asked, trying to sound interested (which he was). Hope I didn't sound to aggressive ...

AND THERE'S NO MOVING ON cause i'm already gone - - - - - - - - - - Artemis stared at the pages in the book, not really concentrating on the words. She was not tired, but she really couldn’t make the words make sense. She didn’t care too much about that, maybe she would just sit in here until it was closed or she got kicked out, it seemed like a good enough plan at least, right? At least she wasn’t stuck in her room with nothing to do, or was being annoyed by the girls outside. Yeah, it was okay in here. She could just sit there, and if her brain actually started to work she could read too. If she didn’t read she could always take the books out and hopefully read them some other time, and bring them back when she was supposed to. She wasn’t that clear on the whole late thing at this school, but if she brought a book back late she had no idea if she would get a fine. In England you got a fine after you were sixteen, but it might just be fines for everyone in America. God, she should have looked more at libraries. Wait, no. Really she shouldn’t. That would have been very odd, imagine going to a library to check about fines. She could be doing much more things with her time, better things with her time. Though what, she didn’t know. But surely there was something, there was always going to be something better she just had to think about it. That meant making her brain work, she could never pick anything easy to do, could she?
She concentrated more on the words in the book, willing them to make sense. She just anted to be doing something, or it was really no better than sitting in her room. She couldn’t see anything else to do with her time really. Sit in the room, stand outside, sit in the library or read. Was that really it? What a shame. If she had stayed at home and gone to the school there she may have had more things to do, but then again she would have to go home and the last time she had been there her mother had tried to throw a bottle of vodka at her head, calling her a brat and a waste of space. Of course like always she tried to make it up to her in the morning , taking her out shopping and practically throwing her money at her. It wasn’t like she would wear anything she gave her with the guilt money, if she was really so guilty she would stop drinking, but of course that wouldn’t happen. She had said so many times she would, she would stop for a week and then it would come back. She felt like hitting her, slapping some sense into her. But maybe it wasn’t just the drink, Artemis wouldn’t blame her if she just didn’t like her own daughter. Her brother didn’t like her for sure, her mother was probably on the fence about the whole thing, and her father. Well, her father was just an arse and that was it really.
She bit her lip and placed the book on the floor with the other one. She couldn’t read, she didn’t know why, she didn’t care why, but she couldn’t. What a waste of time it was staying in here, maybe she should have just dropped off that book and gone back. She would have been in her room but that may have been okay, at least she could have been so bored she was tired, and then she would go to bed. She would be up early tomorrow, so there was one good thing. She was planning on getting up when she saw the boy at the desk turn around to look at her and then look back in front of him. What the hell was he doing? Did he just stare at people for no reason? Artemis mentally cringed at this, she was being very mean, even if it was just her thoughts. She should be nicer when she thought of people, not everyone was out to get her, even if it was most of them. For all she knew he could be quite nice, not that she knew for sure though. There was still a chance that he could go off and tell the others that she was in here, and then of course nothing good would come of that. Didn’t these people ever get tired of this? Adults always told you to ignore these people, and then they would get bored with it but they never did! God damn stupid advice if you asked her. She doubted that it had worked for them when they were younger, they just said it because they couldn’t think of anything better to say and when you were in year six it sounds remotely believable.
Artemis nearly jumped when he spoke to her, okay, she wasn’t expecting that. She was happy that he was still staring ahead of him, she wouldn’t have to be embarrassed about the shocked expression on her face. She took a moment to decide whether to reply to him, he sounded okay, if not a little bored. “I’ve got nothing better to do,” She mumbled, just loud enough that he would hear, maybe he felt the same as her, but then again, maybe not. She often felt like that, she would meet someone and she would be all like, wow! They seem just like me! And then it would all go wrong and she would be left feeling crappy, thinking, well done Artemis! You’ve done it again! “Yes, I’m new. Kind of regretting the fact but there is nothing I can do to change it. Unfortunately.” Her voice faded in the middle and was just about silent at the end. It would be polite to carry on the conversation, but what on earth would she say to him? She hated speaking to people, but she didn’t like to be rude... “Why are you here?” She asked, hoping that this would go okay, if not let her please have a clear run to the door.
